For the past five years, the Indian Sub-Continental Club (ISC) at the University of California, Irvine has hosted Garba With Attitude (GWA), a national Garba/Raas (Indian folk dance) competition, attracting student formed teams, audience members of various ages, and organizations from across the nation. The mission of the ISC is to unite members of the Indian Sub-Continental community, by creating a socially stimulating environment through understanding, respect, diversity, and friendship.
GWA has grown to become America's premier Garba/Raas competitions and is the only competition of its kind on the West Coast. In its sixth year, its focus not only lies in exhibiting the values and expressions of this form of dance, but also in promoting cultural awareness. It is a platform for philanthropic awareness through fostering a competitive and professional atmosphere.
The 2008 student-run competition will be held on Satruday, February 9th, 2008 at the prestigious Richard and Karen Carpenter Center in Long Beach. In addition to this, we will also be organizing a participant mixer prior to the show. This will create a forum where all competition participants and supporters from various backgrounds will be able to create alliances between the colleges and universities they represent.
In the past five years, Garba With Attitude has grown from five California universities to over 200 participants from 10 universities from across the United States. The show has had a record three year sell out point with over 1,100 audience members which include students, representatives from various organizations, and family members of participants, show organizers, providing an excellent medium for advertising opportunities. |
